California Title 24 Restroom Door Signs

What Title 24 requires

The California Building Code asks for two signs at every public restroom: a tactile wall sign with raised characters and Grade 2 Braille on the latch side of the door, and a geometric symbol mounted on the door itself, centered at 60″ above the floor and contrasting with the door color. These are the door signs. The shape does the identifying — no text is required on the door.

Which shape for which restroom

An equilateral triangle (vertex up) marks a men’s restroom. A circle marks a women’s restroom. A triangle superimposed on a circle marks a restroom anyone can use — all-gender, unisex, or family. Each is 12″ across, so it reads at a glance from down the hall.

Geometric only, or with the accessibility symbol

Order the plain geometric shape, or a version that adds the wheelchair (ISA) pictogram to identify an accessible restroom. The pictogram is printed on the shape; the door sign itself never carries Braille or raised characters — that belongs on the wall sign.

Door sign + wall sign = a compliant set
